It is recommended to fax or E-mail your request as it is almost impossible to reach the NMC by phone To apply to the NMC you must allow considerable time, since it takes 3-6 months for your registration to be processed. As a rule, Australian and New Zealand nurses must have one year's post graduate experience and South African nurses need three months. Nurses from other countries, such as India, the USA and Canada or Eastern Europe have different rules for being accepted. It is important to understand that each application is individually assessed. If you have insufficient experience in certain specialist areas, you may be required to do extra hours of training in that specialty. We strongly advise, that you do this in your home country as this can be almost impossible to organise in the UK. Please note that the NMC doesn't accept Enrolled Nurses trained abroad on to their register. You can still work in the UK though as an Auxiliary Nurse Trained Abroad (ATA).
